In dramatic fashion, U.S. gets 1-0 win over Algeria and qualifies for next round
PRETORIA, South Africa — The United States used a last-minute goal by forward Landon Donovan to score a 1-0 win over Algeria at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday and qualifiy for a match against Ghana in the World Cup 2010 second round.
The U.S. won Group C, and will be joined by England which qualified by beating Slovenia. England will face powerhouse Germany. Had Donovan not scored the goal, Slovenia would have qualified second and England would have won Group C.
The U.S.-Algeria match was highly entertaining, with both teams barely missing several scoring opportunities.
Quote“Of course, we should have and could have scored earlier, which would have spared us that dramatic ending. In the end, though, it’s a good thing that it happened that way, so quickly. I didn’t even have time to think what I was going to do. Being in the right place and putting the ball in the net just came naturally. The best thing for us to do now is to rest because we really need it, but I can assure you that we’ll be ready for the next round.”Landon Donovan, U.S. forward
