Chávez inspires youth

Jaime González knows little about the life and work of César Chávez, yet he feels proud that a Latino leader has such an impact not only in California but the entire nation.

González, 15, is a student at Roseville's Silverado Middle School and is a Mexican immigrant who came to this country four years ago. He was among hundreds of students who participated in the 10th annual César Chávez Youth Leadership Conference last Saturday.

"In México I had never heard of César Chávez but when I got here I learned he was a very important person and his legacy has kept strong among the Latino community; he was a leader who fought for the civil rights of Latinos and that makes me feel proud," said González.
