Parks department seeks volunteers

MODESTO -- Volunteers are needed for the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department's next 'Takin' it to the Streets' event on Sat., Sept. 17. Volunteers can register through the City of Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department's Web site at www.modestogov.com/prnd.

The citywide volunteer cleanup day provides an opportunity for everyone to get involved in making Modesto even better. When registering, volunteers can select to work a specific project and with several different projects to choose from: Tuolumne River Clean Up at TRRP Park, River Clean and park clean up at Beard Brook Park, weed abatement projects and beautification projects. Volunteers will be notified of their check-in location via e-mail after signing-up online at www.modestogov.com/prnd.

Youth soccer tryouts/camp

TURLOCK -- The Turlock FC soccer club is putting on tryouts and a free soccer camp for all youth soccer players ranging from age 7 to 17.

The camp and tryouts will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 11) at the Turlock Soccer Complex. The camp will focus on technical skills such as ball control, dribbling, passing, shooting and goal-keeping. The activities will be put on by the coaches and players of the Turlock FC soccer club.

MJC celebrates 90 years

MODESTO -- Modesto Junior College invites the community at 3 p.m. Mon., Sept. 19 to celebrate its first of several 90th anniversary events.

September 19 marks the first day of classes held by Modesto Junior College in 1921, which were offered on the Modesto High School campus that first year. MJC will commemorate this landmark birthday with the dedication of a large brass MJC seal mounted in stone at the center of the Quad on East Campus, 435 College Ave.

The ceremony will continue in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center with the premier screening of a video documentary, produced by Wes Page, chronicling MJC's nine-decade legacy. After the screening of the documentary everyone is invited to a reception in the lobby.

"For 90 years MJC has been a vital part of the Central Valley and we're excited to be able to celebrate such a milestone in the college's history," said MJC Interim President Larry Calderón. "We would be honored to have community members come to the campus and celebrate this special event and see all the wonderful things that take place here every day."

Additional special events taking place later in the semester are the opening of Glacier Hall and the Agriculture Pavilion on MJC's West Campus.

Annual urban river cleanup

MODESTO -- The Tuolumne River Trust, Kaiser Permanente, the Modesto Peace and Life Center and hundreds of volunteers will team up to help pick up trash along the river's bank and also float the river by canoe to pull out tires, shopping carts and other debris from the waterway from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 17 at Legion Park.

Local businesses are encouraged to bring a team of staff and set up a booth at the event. Tuolumne River Trust will be launching their canoe fleet to volunteers on a first come first serve basis to clean up river debris. Volunteers are encouraged to bring along small boats or canoe's to help with the clean up and stay to enjoy the river with fellow volunteers following the clean up.

There will be plenty of work to do on the nearly two miles of shoreline as well. So roll up your sleeves, bring your gloves and a picnic for your team of volunteers or yourself and have lunch in the park.

WATERFORD -- El centro familiar de alfabetización 21st Century Family Literacy en conjunto con el programa de Desprez de la escuela de Waterford y la preparatoria Waterford High School están ofreciendo un curso educativo para adultos en cuanto a su preparación para el examen de GED (General Education Development. El cursó se está ofreciendo en inglés o español y es totalmente gratis. Hay becas disponibles para el examen de GED.

Las clases se estarán llevando a cabo en la preparatoria Waterford, salón 1201 para inglés y salón 1202 para español -- todos los martes y los jueves de las 6 p.m. a las 9 p.m.

Folk dance record

GUADALAJARA -- A total of 457 Mexicans on Saturday set a Guinness record for the largest folk dance performance in the world at the International Mariachi and Charreria Conference being held in the western Mexican city of Guadalajara.

In front of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Cathedral, dancers performed for 10 minutes to typical Mexican songs like 'Guadalajara,' 'El Jarabe Tapatio' and 'El Son de la Negra,' a combination that got them into the Guinness Book of Records.
