MJC celebrates 90 years

MODESTO -- Modesto Junior College invites the community at 3 p.m. Mon., Sept. 19 to celebrate its first of several 90th anniversary events.

September 19 marks the first day of classes held by Modesto Junior College in 1921, which were offered on the Modesto High School campus that first year. MJC will commemorate this landmark birthday with the dedication of a large brass MJC seal mounted in stone at the center of the Quad on East Campus, 435 College Ave.

The ceremony will continue in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center with the premier screening of a video documentary, produced by Wes Page, chronicling MJC's nine-decade legacy. After the screening of the documentary everyone is invited to a reception in the lobby.

"For 90 years MJC has been a vital part of the Central Valley and we're excited to be able to celebrate such a milestone in the college's history," said MJC Interim President Larry Calderón. "We would be honored to have community members come to the campus and celebrate this special event and see all the wonderful things that take place here every day."

Additional special events taking place later in the semester are the opening of Glacier Hall and the Agriculture Pavilion on MJC's West Campus.
