Jaime Escalante dies

Jaime Escalante came to California in 1964 to change his life. Instead, he changed the lives of hundreds of barrio students from East L.A.

Escalante -- who inspired the 1988 movie 'Stand and Deliver' and portrayed by Edward James Olmos -- died March 30 at his son Jaime Jr.'s home in Roseville, where he lived the last years of his life. He died from bladder cancer, a disease he suffered from a year ago. He was 79 years old.

Escalante, a native of Bolivia, served 30 years as a teacher in both Los Ángeles and Sacramento and he always was known for instilling in Latino students a love for math.
