Longoria, López return for ALMAs

Actress Eva Longoria still remembers being a "seat filler" almost 12 years ago at the ALMA Awards.

"I just wanted to get in the building to see the stars, and to see people like me reflected on that stage," said Longoria.

This month, Longoria will be the one person some "seat fillers" will most likely want to eye when she produces and co-hosts the 2011 National Council of La Raza's ALMA Awards.

The awards ceremony will be held Saturday (Sept. 10) at the Santa Mónica Civic Auditorium and broadcast on NBC (KSEE Channel 24 in Fresno/Visalia and KCRA Channel 3 in Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto) at 8 p.m. on Sept. 16.

The one-hour televised ceremony will be hosted by Longoria and long-time friend, comedian/actor George López.

"George can never say no to me," said Longoria during a telephone conference last Wednesday. "I make him do everything with me. He's an amazing co-host."

The ALMA Awards will honor Latinos in music, television and film "who have upheld and promoted a socially proactive image of Hispanic culture in today's media."

Longoria, who became most known for her role as Gabrielle in 'Desperate Housewives,' said being executive producer and co-host means a lot "because there aren't any other platforms that recognize positive images of Latinos in television, music and film."

There will be a different look to this year's ALMA Awards. For one, NBC is taking over the broadcast from ABC. And, the show will be condensed into one hour.

That means Longoria will no longer be making 16 wardrobe changes.

"This year, I'm only going to do about six or seven," she said.

NBCUniversal family members Telemundo and the mun2 cable television network will also be involved. Telemundo News will feature highlights of the event, and mun2 will re-broadcast the awards ceremony at a later date.

Telemundo.com will be the official ALMA Awards website, offering behind-the-scenes content and red carpet coverage.

Mun2's music variety show '18 and Over' will air a pre-awards special from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 16.

Presenters will include Jéssica Alba, Mario López, Michael Peña, and Benjamín Bratt.

Nominees include Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo, Penélope Cruz, Rosario Dawson, Zoë Saldana, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer López, Sofía Vergara, Constance Marie, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin.
