The Stockton area was well represented at the 2018 Danzantes Unidos Festival held March 23-25 at the Clovis East High School complex, with showcase concerts at the Warnors Theatre.
The festival – which drew more than 1,500 participants from as far away as Chicago and New Orleans – featured dance workshops, a folklórico marketplace, and dance performances on Saturday and Sunday separate from the evening dance concerts.
Ballet Folklórico Raíces Mexicanas de María Valdovinos of Stockton performed dances from Chihuahua on opening night of the Danzantes Unidos Festival at the Warnors Theatre on March 23.
The group’s performance was broken into a children’s dance and an adult dance.
Gustavo Valdovinos, a group member, said he has been dancing since he was 12 years old when his mother insisted he dance. “I didn’t want to dance,” he recalled before the group’s performance.
Today, he handles the choreography for Raíces Mexicanas.
He attends the festival every year to pick up as much information as possible to share with the group, which is led by his sister.
