Men try on high heel pumps for a good cause

SAN JOAQUÍN COUNTY

STOCKTON -- A group of men will trade their sneakers for high heel pumps on April 18, when the Women's Center of San Joaquín County will host its second annual 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes' men's march at Sherwood Mall in Stockton.

The demonstration is a protest to rape, sexual assault and gender violence. The purpose of the march is to create community awareness and involve men in ending sexualized violence.

Proceeds from this event will help to support the Women's Center's sexual assault services.

Last year, more than 90 courageous men participated in the local march, helping to raise funds and awareness, and encouraging more men to speak out against rape and sexual assault.

Registration for the march will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the food court of Sherwood Mall, and the walk will step off at 9 a.m. There will be coffee, snacks, photo opportunities and activity stations along the walk route. Registration is $25 for men who bring their own shoes and $35 for men who require shoes. All walkers will receive a free T-shirt.

Eggstravaganza

STOCKTON -- The Central Church of Christ, located at 4368 N. Sutter St., is holding its eighth annual Eggstravaganza from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday (April 11).

The event will include free Easter egg hunts for all ages, along with free games and activities and free candy. In addition, there will be a Jello egg toss for adults.

Informational meeting

STOCKTON --Sibshops, a program for brothers and sisters of children with special needs, is holding an informal meeting from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 24 at Quail Lakes Baptist Church, 1904 Quail Lakes Drive.

Siblings ages 7 to 14 will participate in recreational activities, learn about and meet other siblings of special needs children.

Children are to wear tennis shoes and socks (no sandals or flip-flops) and comfortable clothing.

Poetry night

Celebrating Selena's life

STOCKTON -- San Joaquín Delta College will host the first ever 'Remember Selena: Celebrating her music and the city of Corpus Christi' event through May 5. The event includes a Web site design contest, a mural contest on a recreational vehicle, a Selena look-alike contest, a Selena dance contest, a back-up singer contest, and a film contest.

Mariachi festival to benefit the students

MODESTO -- The Hispanic Leadership Council of Stanislaus County presents its 15th annual Mariachi Scholarship fundraiser at 6 p.m. April 24 at the Assyrian American Civic Club, 2618 N. Golden State Blvd.

The event will begin with a no-host social hour followed by dinner and entertainment.

Featured artists include local singer Berta Olivia; Mariachi Mexicanisimo; Los Tapatíos Del Puerto; and Ballet Folklórico Cultural.

NEWMAN -- La policía sigue buscando a Martín Ruvalcaba, de 47 años de edad, de Newman que desapareció de su casa el 14 de febrero.

Ruvalcaba, de 47 años de edad, sufre de la enfermedad Huntington's, la cual es un desorden degenerativo al sistema nervioso.

De acuerdo a la policía, como a las 11 a.m. la esposa de Ruvalcaba le pidió que se diera un baño. Cinco minutos más tarde, ella fue a revisarlo pero él ya no estaba y la puerta de la cochera estaba parcialmente abierta.

Ruvalcaba pesa 150 libras; mide 5 pies, 5 pulgadas; tiene pelo canoso; y, ojos color café.

Leslie Farms workers sought

The Frente Indígena de Organizaciones Binacionales (FIOB) and the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation are seeking former farmworkers at Leslie Farms. The tomato and strawberry grower in north San Diego County is known to many workers as "Los Diablos."

Up to $400,000 is available to pay workers as a result of a settlement of a class action lawsuit brought by former workers who claimed the company did not pay all wages owed them for overtime and other hours worked.

Eligible claimants must mail their claims no later than April 30, 2009 in order to receive money.

The settlement involves workers who were employed by the company between July 23, 1999 and July 22, 2003.
