For its fourth consecutive year, the Tuolumne River Trust is organizing the 'Paddle to the Sea' event which takes boaters down the Tuolumne River and out to the San Francisco Bay.
The main focus is to raise awareness about the river environment.
"Paddle to the Sea's purpose is to vividly demonstrate the interconnectedness of our waterways, our ecosystem and our communities," event director Jessie Raeder said.
The event is already underway and on Thursday (June 14) participants and family and friends will arrive in Modesto for a barbecue from 3 to 5 p.m. in Legion Park, which will feature airport neighborhood residents who take part in the trust's Nature and Neighborhoods program.
Also, on June 15 boaters will enjoy a lunch at the Riverdale Park in West Modesto. . Nature and Neighborhoods operates there, too.
The event -- which started in Groveland -- continued past La Grange, Waterford and Modesto will go on through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to the bay on June 20.
