Nestor Melchor has lived what many would consider a nightmare, but he remains positive and continues his fight.
Melchor hurt his back while working for a dairy farm and his boss fired him when Melchor asked for medical insurance for his injury. Melchor said his boss fired him when he asked for medical insurance for his injury. Melchor has filed a lawsuit alleging that the boss tried to run over him.
Today, the case is moving through the court system, and Melchor continues to borrow money from relatives to provide for his family.
His story and that of many other dairy workers were highlighted during an outreach event the California Rural Legal Assistance held at St. Jude Catholic Church.
The idea behind the event was to educate dairy workers about their rights, immigration lawyer Esmeralda Zendejas said.
"We believe things have improved a bit in regards to workers' rights," Zendejas said. "Yet we will continue with these types of educational events in other parts of the Central Valley."
