MERCED -- The 2012 version of the Merced County Fair promises to have fun for everyone when it opens its gates Wednesday (June 13).
The fair has slashed general admission in half from last year, meaning that the fun comes with a $5 admission.
That means fairgoers can listen to the music of Christian music group The Afters (June 13), Average White Band (June 14), Little Texas (June 15), a musical tribute to Journey (June 16) and Caravanserai, a tribute band to Santana (June 17).
The concerts are free with paid admission.
On Thursday, children under 12 will be admitted free. That day will feature a Rockin' '50s kids costume contest.Sign-ups start at 5 p.m. at the Plaza Stage and the contest begins at 5:30 p.m. There will be two age categories -- infants to two years and three to five years. Each child who participates in the event will receive a ribbon, a certificate and a coupon for a free Icee at the fair.
La Arrolladora Banda El Limón will perform at Sunday's jaripeo.
'Cows Just Wanna Have Fun' is this year's theme.
Among the new attractions, other than the admission reduction:
A fireworks show will celebrate opening day at 10 p.m. Wednesday (June 13) in the Grandstands, following boat races.
Seniors 65 and over will get free admission on opening day.
The fair will include a zip line and a 'Walk On Water' bubble ride.
A children's area will feature fun and activities for kids, including a petting zoo.
Other attractions include racing pigs, hypnotist Terry Stokes, pedal tractor races, and, live music at the Wine Garden.
The agricultural roots of Merced County will be seen in exhibits, barns filled with 4-H and FFA animal projects, and, the junior livestock auction in the Les McCabe Arena.
