Frida Kahlo's life subject of discussion

SACRAMENTO -- Gregorio Luke, an authority on Mexican culture and art, will present 'An Evening with Frida Kahlo,' March 26 during a lecture sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California. The talk will start at 6 p.m. at the 24th Street Theatre, 2791 24th St.

Kahlo was born July 6, 1907, in Mexico City in a suburb of Coyoacan. She passed away on July 13, 1954, at the age of 47. Since her death, she has achieved international popularity for her paintings. Her art was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico, as well as European influences that included realism, symbolism and surrealism.

She is internationally known for her self-expressed portraits of her personal physical pain. Kahlo's works are often characterized by their stark portrayals of her physical torment due to ill health and a horrific accident she suffered in her late teens. Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits, which frequently incorporate symbolic portrayals of her physical and psychological wounds. Her bombastic two marriages to famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera were the stuff of legend.

Luke is a former director of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. "Luke is an excellent speaker," said Guadalupe Casteñeda, executive director of the MCCNC. He has done previous presentations for us on cinema and music. "
