Playing the wife of a cop in 'End of Watch' came easy for Natalie Martínez.
"I've played a (television) detective for while and I've also done my ridealongs and have met all their wives and their families. One of my best friends is a cop and I know his wife. So I've been around that environment and sort of put myself in that position of how would I feel if my husband would leave and not know if he was going to come home that night or not," Martínez said last week during a telephone interview.
In 'End of Watch' Martínez plays 'Gaby,' the wife of actor Michael Peña's character, 'Mike Zavala' who is a cop. Jake Gyllenhaal and América Ferrera also star as cops in the film, which was just released Jan. 22 in DVD and Blue Ray.
"This film, to tell you the truth -- not even the fact that I'm in it -- it's probably one of my favorite movies. It's such a great movie because you have something for everybody, the men, the women, maybe not so much the kids (she laughs). You have action, you have drama, you have comedy, that is something that I love most about this film is that with everything going on there's humor," said the 28 year-old Cuban American actress. "And I really like that about this story too because you know what? Life is hard man, so sometimes you just got to laugh."
Growing up in her native Miami, Martínez didn't have acting as a career goal, life brought her to it.
"I went into modeling and that helped me create a name for myself and brought me out to Los Ángeles for a job and I stayed out here," she said. "I still had no aspirations to act but one thing lead to another. My modeling agent got me an acting audition and I tried it and got the call. I've been very lucky and fortunate, now the hard part is keeping it up. Once I got the job and fell in love with it, I said 'wow, this is what I want to do.' I had to keep up with it and study and learn and grow in it."
And grown she has, despite some of the obstacles the business provides.
"You know being in this business is an obstacle alone," she said with a laugh. "It's not very stable, you have to work very hard to find that stability and even then, it can get taken away. You have to go to these auditions every day, constantly have to put yourself out there and you have to learn how to have a tough skin and not take anything personal and just continue to move forward because if you stop any second and look back and try to dwell on it you will miss what's in front of you, so you got to continue going forward and forward and forward.
"I feel the hardest thing is to keep the momentum going through the rough times and the times when you don't get a job and you need money. It's an evolving challenge in this business."
Martínez is now a regular on the television series 'CSI: NY' and we can catch her on 'Broken City' -- out in theatres now.
The actress mentions that she admires many Latinas in the industry, but Jennifer López is at the top of her list.
"She's done everything and she's very determined, the way she's grown in this business is so enormous," said Martínez, who was the spokesmodel for JLO by Jennifer López more than 10 years ago.
In case you're wondering, they don't stay in touch.
