Planning underway for Posada California 2012

Dennesly Sandoval has a giant task on her hands as director of Posada California 2012.

The Christmas celebration -- scheduled Dec. 9 at the International Agri-Center -- is 11 months away, but the 20-year-old Chicago native is taking time away as road manager of Los Malandrines to concentrate on logistics for the posada.

That includes finding sponsors, lining up entertainment and soliciting donations.

Los Malandrines, headed by vocalist Esaú Torres Montiel, began the posada in 2005 to provide entertainment for the family and toys for their children. The posada was not held the last two years because the band was touring and did not have enough time to organize the posada, which drew more than 22,000 people in 2009.

That's why Sandoval has stepped in.

"We invite the entire Valley to help brighten Christmas for those who otherwise would not have something to celebrate," said Sandoval.

Organizers have gotten sponsorships from Univisión Fresno, Telefutura Fresno, Radio Campesina 90.5 FM, and Budweiser.

More than 18,000 toys were distributed two years ago, when the band had less than two months to organize the posada. All toys raised will be given to the U.S. Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots foundation.

"They have an excellent way of distributing toys where they are needed the most," said Sandoval.

Los Malandrines and Olmeca Music Group are working on getting a major Mexican regional band to headline the entertainment.

Previous posadas have featured Los Malandrines, Los Originales de San Juan, Los Morros del Norte, comedian Julián Gallegos and children's character El Chichicuilote.

Sanger singer Marilyn Fernández has already committed to the posada.

Booths for vendors are also available.

The posada will be from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.
