Nick Díaz will again have to wait for his chance at Georges St-Pierre.
Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White announced Dec. 7 that St-Pierre, UFC's welterweight champion since 2008, had torn his right anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in training and will not face Diaz at UFC 143 on Feb. 4.
St-Pierre hasn't fought since his unanimous decision over Calaveras High graduate Jake Shields on April 30.
Díaz, a Stockton native, was originally scheduled to face St-Pierre at UFC 137 on Oct. 29, but was pulled from the fight by White after missing promotional appearances.
St-Pierre then pulled out of his scheduled title fight with Carlos Condit on that same card with a left knee injury.
Now Díaz is negotiating to face Condit on the Feb. 4 main event for the interim welterweight title because St-Pierre is expected to be out of action for at least 10 months.
"It's been a roller coaster ride," Díaz's manager César Gracie said.
"It's unfortunate, because Nick wants to prove he's the best and GSP is rated No. 1 (in the world) and Nick wants to prove he's better."
Díaz (26-7) has won his past 11 fights, including a unanimous decision over B.J. Penn at UFC 137.
Gracie said Díaz began training at the end of November and will continue with a few adjustments to face Condit (27-5), a well-rounded fighter who has won 13 of his past 14 fights dating back to July 2006.
The winner of Díaz-Condit would likely face St-Pierre in his return fight, since the Canadian will still be recognized as champion.
