Brazil defeats Ivory Coast 3-1 to earn ticket to second round
Will lose Kaká for next match due to red card
JOHANNESBURG — In a roughly played match Sunday, Brazil gave a small hint of its skills in powering past Ivory Coast 3-1 in a Group G game and qualified for the second round.
The Brazilians got two goals from Luis Fabiano (mins. 24 and 50) and from Elano (min. 60). Ivory Coast got its goal from Didier Drogba (min. 79).
However, Brazil will be without its star Kaká, who received a second yellow card and was red-carded. That means he will miss Brazil’s next match, which is June 25 against Portugal.
Quote
“We didn’t get a lot of luck but we didn’t create much either. This is the second time that our opponents have put a ball in the box and we’ve conceded a goal. After that happened, we pulled ourselves together and put everything into attacking. The players didn’t lack desire, just clear-headedness. We now have to win the last match and roll up our sleeves because we have no intention of going home.” Marcello Lippi, Italy coach
