JOHANNESBURG — The United States and Slovenia tied 2-2 in an important Group C match at Ellis Park.
Slovenia got goals from Valter Birsa (min. 12) and Zlatan Ljubijankic (min. 42) to take a 2-0 halftime lead, only to see the United States bounce back behind goals from Landon Donovan (min. 47) and Michael Bradley (min. 82).
Slovenia remains atop the Group C standings with four points, while the Americans remain tied with England at two points each. England battled to a scoreless tie with Algeria later Friday.
Quote “I am proud of our guys, I don’t know that there are many teams that would have responded in that way to going two goals down. We said (at half-time) if we don’t believe we can do it, then let’s not go back out. We can’t keep putting ourselves in holes like that. We have one more chance against Algeria and we are still alive. Emotionally we have to get up again for a difficult game against Algeria.” Landon Donovan, United States
