On his way to becoming a doctor

DAVIS -- Manuel Tapia spoke with pride and satisfaction on the honor of being one of 12 medical students nationwide in obtaining a $10,000 scholarship to continue his studies.

Tapia, a student at the School of Medicine in the University of California at Davis, was selected by the American Medical Association to receive the scholarship which is awarded to minority students who have done important work for the community.

"I think this is a reward for my effort," said Tapia, the 25-year-old son of Mexican immigrants.

"Hopefully this recognition I have received will be a message for all those who wish to study medicine but did not dare because they think it is very difficult," said Tapia.

Tapia was selected for the scholarship thanks to his work with minority students in their community.
